What is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle, natural form of therapy that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to help create positive changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It works by guiding you into a deeply relaxed state, often referred to as a “trance,” where your mind becomes more open and receptive to helpful suggestions.

Despite common myths, hypnotherapy is not about losing control or being made to do anything against your will. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the session. Think of it more like a state of deep concentration—similar to when you’re completely absorbed in a book or daydream.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Our minds have two main parts: the conscious mind (which we use for thinking, analysing, and making decisions) and the subconscious mind (which stores habits, beliefs, and emotional patterns).

Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, where many of our automatic behaviours and responses are formed. During a session:

  • You are guided into a relaxed state using calming techniques such as breathing or visualisation
  • Your mind becomes more focused and less distracted by everyday thoughts
  • Positive suggestions are introduced to help shift unhelpful patterns or beliefs
  • Your subconscious mind begins to accept these suggestions, supporting long-term change

Because the subconscious mind plays such a big role in how we feel and behave, working at this level can be incredibly effective.
